Customer.io is a behavioral messaging platform that triggers emails and SMS based on what users do.

Here is how to pipe Contact Form 7 submissions straight into Customer.io using Advanced Form Integration. The setup takes about five minutes and runs entirely on your own server.

Why not just use Zapier?

For a single connection between Contact Form 7 and marketing automation, a cloud automation service is overkill. AFI runs on your site, so there is no task meter, no monthly bill that grows with your traffic, and no third party seeing your data.

What you will need

  • A WordPress site with Contact Form 7 installed and at least one form.
  • A Customer.io account.
  • The Advanced Form Integration plugin (free from WordPress.org).

Connect Customer.io to AFI

  1. Log in to your Customer.io account.
  2. Go to Settings → API Credentials and copy your Site ID and API Key.
  3. In WordPress, go to AFI → Settings → Customer.io.
  4. Enter the Site ID and API Key, then click Save Changes.

Setting up the integration

1. Create a new integration

Go to AFI → Add New. Give it a name like CF7 to Customer.io.

2. Pick your trigger

Select Contact Form 7 as the form provider and choose the form you want to connect. AFI detects the fields automatically.

3. Select Customer.io as the destination

Choose Customer.io from the platform dropdown and select Add Customer. This creates or updates a customer in Customer.io.

4. Map fields

Match each Customer.io field on the left to the corresponding Contact Form 7 field on the right. You can also insert static text or dynamic smart tags like {{_submission_date}} and {{user_ip}}.

5. Add conditions if needed

Only want to send certain submissions? Set up a conditional rule. For example, only create a record when a checkbox is checked or when the email field is not empty.

6. Save and test

Click Save Integration. Fill out your form and submit. Check Customer.io to confirm the data arrived. If anything looks wrong, open AFI → Log to see the exact request and response.

Free vs Pro

The free version maps email, name, and standard attributes to Customer.io with unlimited submissions. Pro unlocks custom attributes and event tracking. No per-submission fees on any plan.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need coding skills?

No. Everything is configured through a visual interface, including field mapping.

Will adding this slow down my form?

No. AFI sends data to Customer.io after the form submission completes. Your visitors see the normal success message without any delay.

What if Customer.io is down when a form is submitted?

AFI queues the data via background processing and retries automatically. You can also manually resend from the log screen.
