How to Send Charitable Data to Mailgun
Mailgun is a email delivery platform for managing subscribers and campaigns. If you want Charitable donation synced to Mailgun, you could pay for a cloud automation service. Or you could do it directly from WordPress. This is the direct route.
Why connect directly?
Cloud automation tools like Zapier charge per task and route your data through external servers. AFI processes everything on your WordPress site. No per-donation fees, no external dependencies.
What you will need
- A WordPress site with Charitable installed and configured.
- A Mailgun account.
- The Advanced Form Integration plugin (free from WordPress.org).
Connect Mailgun to AFI
- Log in to your Mailgun account.
- Go to Settings → API Keys and copy your Private API Key.
- In WordPress, go to AFI → Settings → Mailgun.
- Enter your domain and API Key, then click Save.
Setting up the integration
1. Create a new integration
Go to AFI → Add New. Name it Charitable to Mailgun.
2. Pick your trigger
Select Charitable as the form provider. AFI fires when a donation is made through a fundraising campaign, giving you access to donor name, email, donation amount, campaign ID, and gateway.
3. Select Mailgun as the destination
Choose Mailgun from the platform dropdown and pick Add Mailing List Member. This adds a member to a Mailgun mailing list.
4. Map fields
Match each Mailgun field on the left to the corresponding Charitable field on the right. Common mappings include donor name, email, donation amount, campaign ID, and gateway. You can also use smart tags like {{_submission_date}}.
5. Add conditions if needed
Only want to send certain records? Set up a conditional rule based on any field value.
6. Save and test
Click Save Integration. Trigger a test event in Charitable. Check Mailgun to confirm the data arrived. If anything looks wrong, open AFI → Log to see the exact request and response.
Free vs Pro
The free version maps email and name to Mailgun with unlimited records. Pro adds custom field mapping. No per-record fees on any plan.
Frequently asked questions
Which Charitable events trigger the integration?
AFI fires when a donation is made through a fundraising campaign. This covers new submissions and relevant status changes.
Will adding this slow down my site?
No. AFI sends data to the destination after the event completes. Your site performance is not affected.
Can I send data to multiple platforms?
Yes. Create a separate integration for each destination, and every record flows to all of them simultaneously.
