Customer.io is a marketing automation platform. Easy Digital Downloads handles digital product sales beautifully, but sending that data to external platforms needs an integration. AFI bridges that gap to Customer.io.

Why connect directly?

Cloud automation tools like Zapier charge per task and route your data through external servers. AFI processes everything on your WordPress site. No per-order fees, no external dependencies.

What you will need

  • A WordPress site with Easy Digital Downloads installed and configured.
  • A Customer.io account.
  • The Advanced Form Integration plugin (free from WordPress.org).

Connect Customer.io to AFI

  1. Log in to your Customer.io account.
  2. Go to Settings → API Credentials and copy your Site ID and API Key.
  3. In WordPress, go to AFI → Settings → Customer.io.
  4. Enter the Site ID and API Key, then click Save Changes.

Setting up the integration

1. Create a new integration

Go to AFI → Add New. Name it Easy Digital Downloads to Customer.io.

2. Pick your trigger

Select Easy Digital Downloads as the form provider. AFI fires when a purchase is completed, giving you access to customer details, product information, payment data, and download links.

3. Select Customer.io as the destination

Choose Customer.io from the platform dropdown and pick Add Customer. This creates or updates a customer in Customer.io.

4. Map fields

Match each Customer.io field on the left to the corresponding Easy Digital Downloads field on the right. Common mappings include customer name, email, product details, and order total. You can also use smart tags like {{_submission_date}}.

5. Add conditions if needed

Only want to send certain purchases? Set up a conditional rule. For example, only sync completed payments or specific products.

6. Save and test

Click Save Integration. Place a test purchase in your Easy Digital Downloads store. Check Customer.io to confirm the data arrived. If anything looks wrong, open AFI → Log to see the exact request and response.

Free vs Pro

The free version maps email, name, and standard attributes to Customer.io with unlimited orders. Pro adds custom attributes and event tracking. No per-order fees on any plan.

Frequently asked questions

Which Easy Digital Downloads events trigger the integration?

Will adding this slow down my checkout?

No. AFI sends data to the destination after the purchase is processed. Your customers complete checkout normally without any delay.

Can I send purchases to multiple platforms?

Yes. Create a separate integration for each destination, and every purchase flows to all of them simultaneously.
